Volunteer Fees

OVERVIEW | APPLY | FEES

Meet More Mamas

Volunteers generously contribute their time and skills and pay a reasonable fee to help cover the costs of the volunteer experience as well as support the expansion of our economic development programs for women in Ghana. We work hard to keep our volunteer program affordable so that more volunteers are able to take advantage of this great experience to enrich the lives of women in Ghana. The volunteer program fee DOES NOT cover the following items:

  • Airline ticket
  • Travel medical insurance (non-U.S. citizens)
  • Visa to Ghana
  • Required vaccinations

In an effort to keep the volunteer program flexible enough to cover the needs and wants of all types of participants, volunteers are responsible for covering the cost of food and in-country ground transportation during their stay. Depending on one’s level of required comfort, food and transport can be as little as a few dollars a day.

To help in Planning Your Budget we have provided some cost estimates of what to expect to pay for various items once you have arrived in Ghana.

PROGRAM FEES

Volunteer service can range from 2 weeks to 4 months. Program Fees vary based on the length of the volunteer assignment. The program fee is due 60 days prior to the volunteer project start date.

FUNDRAISING

Interested in volunteering but need help in raising funds? Fundraising can be a great way to raise enough money to cover the program fee. Global Mamas has created a Fundraising Kit to assist you in this endeavor.

TAX DEDUCTIONS

Global Mamas is a tax exempt organization in the U.S. and as such is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. The program fee paid to Global Mamas is tax deductible for U.S. taxpayers. Any funds raised by you from another organization or individual to cover the program fee is tax deductible by that organization or individual. If you paid for trip-related expenses out of your own pocket, you can take a tax deduction for your airfare, local transport costs, lodging, and food as long as you are performing services for a charitable organization. Bear in mind that the U.S. IRS allows such deductions only if “there is no significant element of pleasure, recreation, or vacation in the travel.”

Volunteers from other countries should contact their tax accountants to know whether the Program Fee paid to Global Mamas is tax deductible in your home country.

DEPARTURE DATES

While we try to be flexible with arrival dates due to fluctuations in airfares, we strongly encourage you to arrive in Ghana on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. For flights from the US this means departing the day before. Arriving Monday – Thursday ensures we will have a staff person available to pick you up at the airport. More importantly, this allows for the time needed to get you to your project location when our staff is available to welcome you and provide orientation.
