Augustina Dery
Augustina Dery, Shea Producer
Bulk Shea Processing
Augustina came to Damongo from the Brong-Ahafo Region with her husband and two children looking for work farming. She now has five children, all girls. Although the first two have minimal education, as their previous village did not have a school, her three youngest are in various stages of school in Damongo town. For Augustina, a typical work day starts as early as 5 am, when she walks nearly three miles to the area where she collects Shea nuts, she collects the nuts in a large bowl, when it is full, it can weigh between 30 and 35 kilograms, she carries them back to town on her head. Like almost three quarters of Damongo CMA members, Mary is now a widow. Alone, she supports her three youngest daughters, and makes an effort to help out her two older daughters with their young children, whenever her finances make it possible. Though Global Mamas work endeavours with CMA to make Fairtrade and organically certified Shea butter, Augustina is now able to earn a higher than market price for her collected Shea nuts. With this money, Augustina is more comfortably able to send her daughters to school, and provide them with proper meals and health care.
