Monica Eku joined Global Mamas in October 2008 at age 29. She is from Elmina / Cape Coast, and has come a long way in developing and perfecting her batiking craft. She has been taking care of her sister's daughter while also taking on paid apprentices to assist her with her anticipated workload. Since joining Global Mamas, she has been able to buy a cauldron for de-waxing batiked cloth, a pot for melting wax, purchased two large tables for registering motifs on cloth, and earned enough money to repay her loan. As well as her work for Global Mamas, she offers free batiking training to the young girls in her community, and once she has saved enough money, plans to build her own shop to continue to help less fortunate women.
