The small balcony of Molly Djan's apartment block is over-flowing with pink and purple fabric and is a hub of activity. Four sewing machines are whirring away, an apprentice is ironing finished dresses, while friends stop by on their way in and out of the building. Across the corridor from the balcony is Molly's two-room apartment. She shares the bedroom with Emi, the 17-year-old daughter of her cousin. Molly has taken on the responsibility of day-to-day care for Emi who is still at school. Emi's mother and the rest of Molly's family – her mother, brother and two sisters – all live in Winneba, a village about one and a half hours drive from Cape Coast. At 34, Molly is an experienced seamstress, employs three workers and is training up two more women. Everyone arrives for work around 8:00 am and, once Molly has handed out the duties for the day, the packed workshop starts to hum with sewing machines.

  Once work is over, Molly and Emi like to watch TV in their apartment. Two evenings a week they attend church meetings and at weekends they try to get up to Winneba to visit the rest of the family. Molly takes pride in her work and particularly enjoys the challenge of making the reversible dresses in the Global Mamas catalogue, but some of the aprons and potholders are her handiwork too. In joining Global Mamas, Molly hopes to buy a knitting machine, purchase a fridge for her house and work towards her dream of opening and owning her own shop.
