New Product Development Volunteer Opportunities in AfricaNew Product Development

Global Mamas provides sustainable livelihoods for women in Africa by promoting their traditional skills in the production of fair trade products. Each year we produce a new product line and are always seeking the fresh ideas of visiting designers. There are many ways in which we could put your skills to use:

  • Research trends for the coming year and develop concepts.
  • Design & develop new consumer products - home decor, seasonal, ornaments, and accessories.
  • Create new batik textile designs (we will teach you first and then let your ideas run wild).
  • Working side by side with our Mamas, create samples and adjust patterns based on their feedback and realities of production in Ghana (think hand powered sewing machines).
  • Develop and present workshops to improve our Mamas' design and technical skills.

Alice was instrumental in helping Global Mamas expand our product line. With her strong fashion design background, she was able to help Global Mamas in the following ways:

  • Developed a formal quality control system that included detailed specifications on each garment and procedures for creating the garments; introduced system to our female producers
  • Introduced six new children’s and adult garments into Global Mamas wholesale catalog
  • Conducted sizing sessions at public schools and nurseries to get accurate sizing for existing garments

"In those 6 months I had so many great moments. When I left, the women thanked me while I felt that I should be thanking them. I really had a strong connection with some of the women and became close friends. After 4-5 months you start to understand the culture better and realize that your own opinion, perception of beauty, norms and values are based on the culture where you have been raised."
