Cindy Otoo, Seamstress
Batiking & Sewing Center (Cape Coast)
Cindy Otooh has been a seamstress for 10 years and just recently joined the Global Mamas network. If you visit her workshop, she will be wearing a very fashionable dress she designed and made herself. She sits behind a 1970s model Vigarelli and a Husqvarna sewing machine stitching pleats diligently while the 2 employees and 2 apprentices who work for her busily chatter and produce roughly 30 dresses a week. Pictures on the back wall display internet prints which help generate design ideas. These models serve to seed unique sketches which are combinations of several different fashion concepts. The models also inspire Cindy's dreams, which she says is a big shop with 30 employees and 15 apprentices – giving many seamstresses work and designing many of the patterns herself. Cindy was 16 when she took a 1.5 year apprenticeship after junior high school. Her parents were farmers in a small village 50k from cape coast called Aburadunkua-obohen. She says she discovered her talent early on when she was very young - mending and hand-stitching small things on the farm. Now, a mother and business owner with a beautiful smile, she sits in the Prospect Hill area of Cape Coast taking steps toward her dream. And she thinks she can get to that point as one of the many Global Mamas. Thank you for welcoming Cindy as a Global Mama and thank you for your part in realizing her dream.
