With profits from Global Mamas, Esther purchased an electric sewing machine, an embroidery machine and two new ironing boards for her shop.
Esther Gyepi-Garbrah, Seamstress
Batiking & Sewing Center (Cape Coast)
When Esther Gyepi-Garbrah started working as a seamstress she borrowed a manual sewing machine from a friend and worked out of her bedroom. It was not easy for her, as some of her customers did not pay her on time or pay her the full amount due. She also tried exporting her goods to Denmark and the US, but her partners cheated her; she was forced to stop working with them. A true entrepreneur, Esther did not give up and was able to secure a small group of loyal customers, as well as bring on a handful of apprentices. As Esther's success grew she also gained valuable work experience in multitasking that allowed her to finish projects and orders in a timely manner. As a successful seamstress, Esther does all she can to give back. Esther takes the time to ensure each new seamstress is well equipped once they graduate from her apprentice program.
