Batiking & Sewing Center (Cape Coast)
Grace "Araba" Koufie lives in a loud and crowded household near the main open air market in Cape Coast. She is married to a teacher and has a 4-year-old daughter who has already started school. She has had her own business as a seamstress for 4 years and started to work for Global Mamas in Spring 2006. The income she earns pays the school fees and expenses which come to about $300 a year. Grace also has regular medical bills, helps to support a cousin and has one paid employee. Despite these out-goings, her work for Global Mamas means she has just started to be able to save some money. Her hours are long, 7 in the morning until 7 in the evening but if things are busy, she will keep on going until 9 or 10 at night. Her main pleasure outside work is church on Sunday which is the only real chance she gets to see her friends. Grace's dream is to set up a big shop with 10 employees, move out of her in-laws home and build a house for her young family.
