Batiking & Sewing Center (Cape Coast)
The process of batiking has always been an interest for Diana Aba Mends. She learned the trade from her mother at an early age and, in time, was able to attend the Gratis Foundation where she was able to cement her batiking skills. Diana started Bab's Batik Center and in 2009 decided to join the Global Mamas family hoping it would yield additional revenue for her business. Her choice proved to be rewarding and because of the amount of orders, she hired an additional apprentice amounting to a total of three. Although they are unpaid, she provides them with small pocket change as well as food, water and holidays off. Interestingly, Diana also encourages her apprentices to exercise some creative freedom, an uncommon practice, as she hopes that her apprentices will be able to master batking in their own unique way. Though her husband works, she also works an additional job as a caterer in order to provide for her two children, mother and sister. She makes all her decisions with her family in mind as they mean the world to her. Diana believes that by working with Global Mamas she has a new understanding of how to manage her business and create and reach practical goals that will facilitate continued success.
