Florence "Kakra" Thannie, Seamstress
Batiking & Sewing Center (Cape Coast)
Kakra grew up in Cape Coast, a historical town located in the central region of Ghana. After completing senior high school there, a neighbor took Kakra on as an apprentice and taught her to sew. Kakra enjoyed the work and began to sew dresses from her home (her favorite thing to sew is traditional African dresses). Unfortunately, Kakra was never able to collect full price for her work and struggled to save money. Kakra learned of Global Mamas and decided to join in 2007. Now, working with Global Mamas, Kakra's business has flourished. She has a steady stream of orders and runs her own shop called Florentine located in the heart of Cape Coast. She has managed to open two bank accounts that she uses to save money for her wedding and to build a house! Additionally, Kakra has learned new skills such as bookkeeping and fair trade practices through active participation in Global Mama workshops. Kakra is very grateful for the fortune that she has come across working with Global Mamas and generously gives back by providing financial support to her mother, teaching her trade to 2 young women apprentices, and participating in community projects. When interviewed, Kakra commented: Every day is a happy day since joining Global Mamas!
